Air Traffic Service, managed by Paul Kito, is dedicated team of 22 professionals ensuring the safe and efficient management of air traffic. The team oversees airspace operations, provides navigational guidance and facilitates communication between pilots and ground control to maintain smooth aviation operations.

Role of Head of ATS: Ensure smooth administration and management of ATS facilities, personnels, resources, enforces rules, regulations and minimum standards relating to the operation of ATS, personnel licensing and rating including enforcement of medical standards, surveillance of air operations, the operation of the air navigation system, maintain coordination with adjoining states ATS offices, airlines operators and other stakeholders and provision of safe and efficient flow of air traffic services in the Honiara FIR.

Objectives of Air Traffic Services are:

  • prevent collisions between aircraft
  • prevent collisions between aircraft on the manoeuvring area and obstructions on that area
  • expedite and maintain an orderly flow of air traffic
  • provide advice and information useful for the safe and efficient conduct of flights and
  • notify appropriate organisations regarding aircraft in need of search and rescue aid and assist such organisations as required

The provision of Air Traffic Divion accepts responsibility for any reasonable action taken by its employees in deference to safety, and this specifically includes holding aircraft on the ground or in the air to contain workload at a safe level.

The safe functioning of the ATS system requires a team effort by both ATS personnel and pilots. Each participant should monitor the actions of others to the extent that workload and knowledge permit in order to provide an additional safeguard against errors or omissions.

Air traffic control unit: A unit providing any air traffic control service, and includes either an area control centre, an approach control unit, or aerodrome control tower. (CAR)

Air Traffic Management (ATM): The aggregation of the airborne functions and ground-based functions (air traffic services, airspace management and air traffic flow management) required to ensure the safe and efficient movement of aircraft during all phases of operations.
