Santa Cruz, Temotu Province – The ambitious upgrade of Santa Cruz Airfield is progressing steadily, with the first phase of construction now 43% complete and on schedule to wrap up by mid-April 2025. Funded by the World Bank under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), the project is being implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) to enhance air transport safety and reliability in the region.

Key Progress Updates

The initial phase of the project focuses on subgrade treatment and base course construction for 700 meters of the 1,310-meter runway. Meanwhile, preparatory work has already begun at the eastern end of the airfield, marking the start of the second phase.

Additionally, a land survey has been finalized at the western end to confirm boundary alignments. This critical step paves the way for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with local landowners, which will facilitate the planned extension of the airfield.

A Vital Link for Temotu Province

Santa Cruz Airfield serves as a crucial transportation hub for Temotu Province, connecting remote communities with essential services and economic opportunities.

“The Santa Cruz Airfield is a lifeline for our people, ensuring safe and reliable air transport,” said Alwyn Danitofea, Permanent Secretary of the MCA. “This upgrade will significantly improve infrastructure resilience and operational efficiency.”

Contractor Gives Back to the Community

Beyond construction, the contractor China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has been actively supporting the local community through several initiatives, including:

  • Providing waste bins and collection services at the terminal to maintain cleanliness.

  • Cleaning and maintaining a portable toilet for Solomon Airlines pilots and passengers.

  • Supplying water to the local hospital to assist with community needs.

  • Removing old vehicles from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development’s (MID) workshop to clear space for future projects.

Broader Impact of SIRAP2

The Santa Cruz Airfield upgrade is just one component of the larger SIRAP2 initiative, which is delivering critical infrastructure improvements across the Solomon Islands. Other key projects under the program include:

  • Noro Roads rehabilitation

  • Malaita Bridges upgrades

  • Honiara and Munda Airports enhancements

  • Suavanao Airfield improvements

With steady progress being made, the Santa Cruz Airfield upgrade remains on track to meet its deadlines, promising long-term benefits for Temotu Province and the wider region. Further updates will be provided as the project advances.
